Another successful Fill the Ark 5k event took place on June 16, 2007 with over 400 participants and volunteers enjoying the beautiful summer morning together. The goal is always to "fill an ark" with animals for Heifer International, a non-profit organization that sends animals and training to impoverished families around the world, enabling them to improve their quality of life. A simple water buffalo, llama or goat can make a huge difference in their lives, open up new opportunities and allow them to achieve greater self-reliance. We are proud to say that this year's event raised over $7,000 for this organization, which fills about an ark-and-a-half, thanks to the generous donations of so many. We especially want to thank our sponsors, without whom we could not hold this event.
The winners of the 5k race this year were Thatcher Olson for the men with a winning time of 17:31 and Susan Nielsen for the women in 18:53. They each received a Swiss Army watch courtesy of O.C. Tanner Company. These two runners have been in our race every year and we appreciate their support. There were many familiar faces at Fill the Ark and a few new ones whom we hope to see back next year. The prize drawing at the end was a big hit as usual, with perhaps the best chance of winning a prize at any race in the state.
